Driving to Creede takes you through some of the most spectacular scenery with abundant wildlife and exciting adventures awaiting any visitor. Nestled among the San Juan Mountains of Southern Colorado in the heart of the Rio Grande National Forest, and bordered by the La Garita and Weminuche Wilderness, Creede is at the center of vacation paradise. Mineral County, with Creede as the county seat, has only 4% private land, leaving 96% an unparalleled playground for everyone.

Creede

The historic mining town of Creede, one of America's 100 small art towns, is less than a mile from the RV Resort. The Victorian Main Street is lined with excellent galleries, shops and restaurants. Creede is located on US Hwy 149 in the heart of the Silver Thread National Scenic Byway and offers several attractions including:

  • Creede Repertory Theatre—Nationally-acclaimed for excellence in the arts.
  • Creede Historical Museum—Located in central Creede; houses historical items, photographs and offers walking tours.
  • Underground Mining Museum—Located in North Creede; an authentic recreation of an underground mine.
  • Bachelor Historic Loop—A 17-mile loop of Creede's silver mining district with scenic views of the La Garita Range and surrounding area.
  • Wheeler Geologic Area—Unique rock formations in an extraordinary volcanic, geologic area.

Alamosa

Alamosa is located at the intersection of US Hwy 285 & 160, the Navajo Trail, at the crossroads of the mountains meeting the San Luis Valley. Farming abounds, mostly potatoes, livestock, hops, etc. The Great Sand Dunes National Monument, San Luis Lakes State Park and the Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge are in the area. Alamosa is home to Alamosa State College and the Alamosa Visitor Center.

Antonito

Antonito is located on US Hwy 285, just 30 miles south of Alamosa. A major attraction in this area is the historic Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, which is a Registered National Historic Site. It is America's longest & highest antique narrow gauge railroad running through the San Juan Mountains between Antonito and Chama, NM. Antonito is also home to the oldest Church in Colorado, Our Lady of the Guadalupe Parish Church, which is cared for and still serves the community.

Blanca

Blanca, a small mountain community four miles east of Ft. Garland on US Hwy 160, sits at the base of prodigious 14,345 Mt. Blanca, the fourth highest mountain in Colorado. Smith Reservoir, two miles south of Blanca, is a State Wildlife Area offering camping and fishing. Near Smith Reservoir is the old San Luis Southern Railroad trestle, which is listed on the National Historic Register.

Del Norte

Located between Monte Vista and South Fork on US Hwy 160, Del Norte offers historical landmarks with quaint gift shops, art galleries and antique shops. Del Norte is home to the Rio Grande County Museum and Cultural Center. To the north is Penitente Canyon, offering world-class rock climbing, and the Arch of La Garita, a spectacular arch rock formation.

Lake City

Lake City, located on the Silver Thread National Scenic Byway (US Hwy 149) northwest of Creede, is designated as a National Historic District. It is a picturesque frontier town surrounded by fourteeners, which has an annual Arts & Crafts Festival in July. Other attractions include a preserved ghost town in the area, Carson, Sherman & Animas Forks, and beautiful Lake San Cristobal, the second largest natural lake in Colorado.

Manassa

The Jack Dempsey Museum, located in Manassa, Colorado on US Hwy 285, is housed in the legendary boxer's own home.

Monte Vista

Monte Vista is in the heart of the San Luis Valley between Alamosa and Del Norte on US Hwy 160. It is a hub for agriculture, social and cultural activity. Located six miles south of Monte Vista on Hwy 15 is the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge. A driving tour and short trail offer visitors a large variety of waterfowl including sand hill cranes and the rare whooping crane.

San Luis

Built on a mesa in the center of Colorado's oldest town, San Luis, is the “Shrine of the Stations of the Cross”, a series of graphic meditations of the last hours of Christ's life sculptured by Huberto Maestas.

South Fork

Colorado's newest town is located at the junction of the Rio Grande and its south fork, where Colorado's Highway 160 & 149 meet. South Fork is at the beginning of the Silver Thread National Scenic Byway which continues to Creede and Lake City. Just to the west of South Fork is Wolf Creek Ski Area and scenic Wolf Creek Pass, elevation 10,850 feet.

Wolf Creek Ski Area

At the base of the Continental Divide, the Wolf Creek Ski Area receives the greatest annual snow fall in the state of Colorado. The slopes are an excellent blend of terrain with 20% beginner, 45% intermediate and 35% advanced skiing. It is 18 miles west of South Fork on US Hwy 160.
